Part I: The procedures related to performance
Some services you can disable
When the system boots, Windows will automatically activate multiple services (services) that users do not need to. This boot time longer and spend more of system resources. Therefore, you can disable unnecessary services, how do the following:
Click Start> Run ... type in msconfig and press Enter, the dialog box appears (see Figure 1.1).
Click the Services tab. In the list below, please uncheck the following entries to disable them.
Here are some unnecessary services (see Figure 1.1): Alerter, Application Management, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Clipbook, Error Reporting Service, Fast User Switching, Help and Support, IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, Indexing Service, IP SEC, Messenger, Net Logon, Network DDE, NT LM Security Support Provider, the Performance Logs and Alerts, Portable Media Serial Number, QoS RSVP, Remote Desktop Help Session Manager, Remote Assistance, Remote Registry, Routing & Remote Access, Secondary Login, Smart Card, Smart Card Helper SSDP, Discovery Service TCP / IP NetBIOS Helper, Telnet, Uninterruptible Power Supply Service, Universal Plug and Play Device Host, Upload Manager Volume Shadow Copy Service, Web Client, Wireless Zero Configuration, WMI Performance Adapter.
Speed up printing in DOS
Sometimes you need to print documents from DOS, to speed up the printing process, perform the following procedure:
1. Go to Start> Run .... Type Regedit, then press Enter.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM> CurrentControlSet> Control> WOW.
3. In the right pane, double lock up LPT timeout and change its value in 3 (see Figure 1.2), then click OK.

Clean Prefetch folder
WindowsXP uses a Prefetch technique, which reduces the boot time of new applications using the latest. After a period of use, Prefetch folder is full of a waste of hard disk. To clean up this folder, you do the following:
1. Click Start, Run ... type Prefetch and then press Enter.
2. Press Ctrl-A to select all objects.
3. Click Delete to remove.
Reducing visual effects
By default, Windows XP uses a lot of graphic effects to create stunning user interfaces. However, these effects will reduce the access speed of the system. Therefore, if necessary you can not disable them by following these steps:
1. Right-click My Computer icon and select Properties then select the Advanced tab.
2. In the Performance frame, click Settings.
3. List of effects listed. To remove any effects you click uncheck the checkbox. Or if you want to disable all, click select Adjust for best performance (see Figure 1.3).
